How your driving techniques can help your mileage

Darn! Caught in traffic again… That was my refrain this evening as I made my way back home to the suburbs from the "Big City." It was, as they call it… Rush Hour! Too bad that "rushing" is about all that anyone was accomplishing… except for the police and tow truck operators who were wrapping up and cleaning up accidents all over the place. Everybody else was in a "hurry up and wait" mode.

I don't know what it is with some people but you put them behind the wheel of a car or truck and suddenly they "act as if" their last name was Petty, Earnhardt or Andretti. Hurry up to slam on their brakes at the next knot in traffic. All too often in vehicles that are not up to the task and then the driver tries to blame the driver ahead when they can't stop in time and an accident results. Some of them even have signs on the backs of their cars that state that they're not tailgating but instead that they're "drafting!" Really? I doubt they'd fail to pee their pants should they get a ride with someone who REALLY knows how to properly "Draft" at 200+ miles per hour!

Not only does this "rushing" create extra wear and tear on your equipment… it also contributes to accidents, that can be powerfully expensive, but it also contributes to a tremendous waste of the petroleum resources of the world. I know… it IS fun to zoom along. Why not try it on a race course or on a LONELY country road… but Please, NOT in "rush hour" traffic!

Have any of you priced a complete "Brake Job" lately for your favorite ride? Was it cheap? I thought not! If you'd stay back a few extra car-lengths, you could postpone that brake job a LOT longer, given all other conditions remaining the same. And you would not have to spend quite as much money replacing the extra fuel you wasted with all the "rushing" that you're "trying" to do. Oh yes, your tires also catch heck with all that rushing up behind people to slam on the brakes as well. They'll last longer too, if you take it easy on them as well. Last time I checked, prices had not gone DOWN on my favorite brand of tires.

OK, so I'm glad to be back at my abode in the burgs… Finally "off the road again" where it's moderately safe. Nothing much worse than a frying pan alongside the head if upset the wife! *GRIN!*

If you really want to save money on your fuel and maintenance costs, you really do need to be pouring some EnviroMax Plus into your tank every time you fill up. This week I did a tune-up on our Ford Taurus. It has well over 200K miles on the engine which has NEVER been opened. I had purchased new spark plugs, distributor cap, rotor, plug wires and a new oil and air filter (and new oil).
