How to Improve Your Gas Mileage in one easy step!

More completely titled... How to Improve Your Gas Mileage and Simultaneously Reduce Your Fuel Costs, Exhaust Emissions and Extend Your Engine's Useful Life!

Today, more and more of us are looking for that "lowest price" when we see that gas gague pointer        headed towards the "Big E". Why? It seems that with the rising price of gasoline (and no end in sight) our pockets are emptying faster than the gas tank! I recently asked a lady how much it cost her to fill up her SUV and she pointed to the pump... that had almost finished pumping and it was nearing the $100 mark! Wow! How necessary is that SUV, I wonder?

What to do? There are options that we all have, as humans, to battle the rising gas prices. First and foremost, WALK when you can! When your next trip is REALLY within walking distance, DO IT! Just think for a moment about how much pollution is created each year, each month and in reality, each day... by those of us who just jump in our cars and trucks to drive when we could have walked where we were going!

On those trips where walking is NOT in the realm of possibility, what can you do to Increase your Gas Mileage? You can, if you drive with some real attention to detail, improve your mileage by at least 5% to 10% by simply changing your driving habits! That is a proven FACT!

What changes, you ask? The number one waster of fuel is: Jack Rabit Starts! The next time you are at an intersection, waiting for the light to change, PAY ATTENTION to the cars around you! You will hear people "gunning their engines" as if they were going to launch at the "drag strip". Others will be there doing their nails or reading a book! But when the light turns green, the majority will RUSH to the next Red Light to wait again! What's the point in that?

Instead... When the light turns green, GENTLY press on the gas and move ahead, picking up speed gradually. You WILL waste less gas that way and you won't have so much speed built up when you come to the next red light! With less speed built up, you will wear out LESS of your brakes stopping. Do you remember the LAST time you had to pay for a brake job? Was it CHEAP? I don't think so... So why are you being so eager to wear them out again? DUH???

Other really cool and easy ways to save on gas... Think while driving and SLOW DOWN! It has been PROVEN that NOT exceeding the speed limit can save you a TON of money over a year's time. It takes more fuel to go faster... Solution? Leave earlier and drive slower!

Also, make sure that your tires are properly inflated. Under-inflated tires waste fuel! They increase the "rolling resistance" and it takes more fuel to get down the road. I purposely put an extra five pounds of air in my tires to "further decrease" the rolling resistance. Why? There was a gentleman, some years ago, who set some kind of a world's record for mileage and he traveled coast to coast to prove his point. He had his tires inflated close to the bursting point (NOT SUGGESTED HERE) so that there was very little contact patch with the road and minimum rolling resistance. So it does work. Just keep YOUR tires well inflated!
